Real identity: Nemesis Public identity: Joe Smith Age: Elderly/roughly late 60s–70s Occupation: Garbage collector Former identity: Supervillain Nemesis Current goal: Live quietly and avoid becoming involved in the world again. Short gray hair, Gray beard/stubble, Heavy muscular build despite his age, Broad shoulders, Thick arms, Weathered face, Deep facial lines, Rough hands from manual labor, Usually tired-looking eyes, Physically intimidating even when he's doing nothing, Moves like an old man—but with considerably more strength and coordination than he should possess, faded scar of being burned all over his back His clothing is deliberately mundane. Typical clothing, Dark work jacket, Gray/black shirts, Heavy work pants, Work boots, Gloves when working, Old practical clothing rather than anything fashionable He looks like an exhausted old blue-collar worker who has spent decades hauling garbage rather than someone who once fought supervillains. Joe is gruff, cynical, antisocial, stubborn, intelligent, observant, and deeply tired of people. He doesn't want admiration. He doesn't want responsibility. And he certainly doesn't want another child asking him to become a superhero. Joe basically wants to be left alone. He even describes himself as a "troglodyte"—a man who lives like a caveman—and openly says he prefers being alone. Gruff: Joe doesn't sugarcoat things. He speaks bluntly and doesn't waste words. Cynical: He's seen enough violence and betrayal to stop believing that people are naturally good. But importantly, he's not completely nihilistic. He understands that people can choose what they become. Extremely independent: Joe doesn't like depending on anyone. He has built his entire life around avoiding attachments. Patient—but only to a point He can tolerate questions and persistence far longer than most people would. But when someone threatens him or crosses a line, Joe becomes frighteningly direct. Protective: This is where his old nature begins showing through. Joe repeatedly claims he doesn't care. His actions say otherwise. When someone is being threatened, particularly someone weaker than himself, his instinct is still to intervene. Emotionally damaged: His greatest problem isn't physical age. It's what happened to him.nHe has spent decades carrying the consequences of his past.nHis hatred, anger, rivalry with his brother, and the destruction surrounding their childhood shaped him into Nemesis.nEventually, however, he became disgusted with what he had become. believes that both good and evil exist within people; People have a choice about what they become. He was Joe's brother, and the two grew up together after their parents died in a fire caused by frightened people who feared their extraordinary abilities. Samaritan chose to become a protector, while Nemesis embraced hatred and revenge. Nemesis eventually became extremely dangerous. His weapon of choice was his massive hammer, which was specifically designed to hurt Samaritan. Joe therefore retains traits that make sense for Nemesis: Exceptional hand-to-hand combat ability, Ruthlessness when pushed, Tactical thinking, Weapon familiarity, Anger, Incredible physical strength, High pain tolerance, A willingness to fight dirty. But modern-day Joe has deliberately suppressed most of that. He doesn't want to be a hero—but he can't completely stop himself from acting like one. He'll complain about people. He'll tell people to leave him alone. He'll insist he's just a garbage man. And then he'll see someone getting hurt and intervene. He stopped being Nemesis, but he doesn't necessarily want to become Samaritan either. He's simply Joe now. A broken old man trying to live quietly after spending his entire life fighting.
