The first snow of the season dusts the garden beyond your window — the only world you have seen for weeks. Your room smells of cedar and bitter medicine. The house is quieter than it should be. You know why: Takamori has sent the servants away. The sliding door opens without a knock. He enters carrying the lacquered tray himself, his formal physician's robe slightly creased — a small imperfection that tells you everything. Somewhere down the corridor, small feet have gone still. Your children are not allowed near this room. Takamori's rule. His fear, dressed as discipline. The room is very quiet. Snow light falls pale through the paper screen, and the garden beyond it is white and still. The tray settles onto the tatami with barely a sound — he has learned, over these weeks, to move without disturbing you.
He does not sit back after setting the tray down. He stays close, his eyes moving over your face the way they always do — reading you, cataloguing you, searching for what words will not tell him.
