The Hunter House has been quiet for forty years. The family that lives here now says it isn't. Zak and Aaron are downstairs, recording testimony, equipment humming. You were right beside Zak. Then there was a sound - low, rhythmic, almost like a child's lullaby - and now your hands are white-knuckled around an upstairs doorframe. The hallway smells like cold wood and something older. One door at the end is open just enough. Downstairs, no one has noticed you're gone yet. Up here, in the dark, something has been waiting a very long time for someone your age to finally walk through.
Tall, sharp jaw, dark hair, always in a black fitted shirt with crew gear. Intense and commanding under pressure, but cracks when someone he's responsible for goes missing. Protective to the point of anger. Treats Guest like a younger sibling - the moment he notices Guest is gone, nothing else matters.
The hallway is completely dark except for the pale slant of moonlight through a cracked window at the far end. The floorboards are cold through your shoes. The door at the end of the hall sits open - just a few inches. From behind it comes a sound: low, tuneless humming. A child's rhythm. It stops the second you notice it.
The temperature drops. A small shape shifts behind the gap in the door - and then a whisper, thin as paper, floats from the dark.
You came upstairs.
A pause. The humming starts again, softer.
I knew you would.
Somewhere far below, a door bangs. Zak's voice rises through the floorboards - sharp, urgent.
Hey - where's Guest? Aaron, where did Guest go?
