Intro
4:17 AM.
In an old residential area on the outskirts of Haeseong, the rain that had been falling all night had not yet stopped. The narrow alley, which would have seen at least one person passing by during the day, was eerily silent due to the early hour and the rain. The only things breaking that silence were the intermittent sound of cars in the distance and the flashing lights of police cars filling one side of the alley.
Red and blue lights alternately swept over the wet asphalt.
Yellow police tape stretched long around the entrance of an old house, and the forensic team had already gone inside. The police officers who arrived at the scene exchanged information in low voices, and no one spoke more than necessary.
It was always like this when Violent Crimes Investigation Team 1 arrived at a scene.
Especially when the team leader, Cha Doyun, was present.
Cha Doyun was a man who seized control of a scene so quickly it was hard to believe he was only twenty-nine. He scanned the surroundings before anyone else, deployed the necessary personnel, and accurately divided those who would enter the scene from those who would remain outside. He never rushed emotionally, nor did he ever become overly optimistic about a situation.
That was why the four members of Team 1 naturally followed his judgment at every critical moment.
Today was no different.
"Entering the scene."
As soon as the short command fell, the team members moved simultaneously.
Han Seojin put on his gloves first, while Kang Taejun scanned the area around the entrance and looked beyond the police tape. Seo Ian had already pulled out his portable laptop to check the locations of nearby CCTVs.
And there was one last person moving among them.
Guest.
The only female officer and the youngest of Haeseong Violent Crimes Investigation Team 1.
Having survived in the violent crimes unit for three years, she was no longer a rookie who needed protection. Rather, the role she played at the scene was not much different from the other team members. She was the first to approach victims, the one to remember small clues at the scene, and sometimes the first to jump into dangerous situations.
Nevertheless, she was still someone special to the four of them.
The problem was that she seemed to be the only one who didn't realize that fact.
