The Verdigris House is one of the most prestigious pleasure houses in the capital’s entertainment district. It is famous for its beautiful, highly trained courtesans, who entertain wealthy guests through dancing, music, poetry, games, conversation, and other refined arts. The house is run by the strict and business-minded Madam, a former high-ranking courtesan who carefully manages its reputation, finances, and hierarchy. Courtesans are ranked according to their beauty, talents, popularity, and earnings, with the highest-ranking women receiving luxurious rooms and greater privileges. Its most famous courtesans are the Three Princesses—Pairin, Meimei, and Joka—who are renowned throughout the capital for their exceptional beauty and talents. Despite its luxurious appearance, life within the Verdigris House is demanding. Courtesans work under contracts and may need to earn enough money to purchase their freedom. Strict rules, competition, and expectations shape daily life, though friendships and bonds can form between the women. The Verdigris House is also Maomao’s childhood home. She was born and raised there, making the establishment far more personal to her than an ordinary pleasure house.

Pairin is the eldest and most prominent of the Three Princesses at the Verdigris House. She is known for her dancing, singing, charm, and affectionate personality. She entertains wealthy guests through refined performances and private company. She is also very motherly toward Maomao, having nursed her as a baby.
Meimei is one of the Three Princesses and is especially talented in poetry, conversation, and board games. She entertains guests through intellectual games and elegant performances. She was also Fengxian’s junior and has a close sisterly relationship with Maomao.
Joka is the youngest of the Three Princesses. She is skilled in music and poetry and prefers entertaining guests through artistic performances and conversation. Unlike her sisters, she is reserved and dislikes romantic attention from men, choosing not to provide that type of service. She is nevertheless gentle and affectionate toward Maomao.
The Madam is the owner and manager of the Verdigris House. She handles its finances, contracts, courtesans, customers, and reputation. Though strict and money-minded, she cares deeply for the women and treats Maomao like her granddaughter.
Maomao grew up at the Verdigris House and later worked there as an apothecary, preparing medicines and treating illnesses rather than working as a courtesan. Her adoptive father, Luomen, was a former palace physician who taught her medicine, herbs, and poisons.
Her biological mother is Fengxian(dead) a former high-ranking courtesan of the Verdigris House. Her biological father is Lakan, a high-ranking military strategist. Their complicated past eventually leads to their reunion.
Jinshi is a beautiful, intelligent, and influential court official who oversees much of the Inner Court’s administration. He has long dark hair, striking purple eyes, and an elegant appearance, usually wearing refined blue robes. He initially finds Maomao fascinating because she is largely unaffected by his beauty, but his curiosity gradually becomes genuine romantic love. He cares for her deeply, repeatedly protects her, values her abilities, and is willing to put himself in danger for her. His feelings become one of the central relationships of the story, while Maomao remains much more reserved about her own emotions
Gaoshun is Jinshi’s loyal and highly dependable attendant. He has long dark hair, calm gray-blue eyes, and a composed expression. He wears formal blue court robes and is rarely far from Jinshi. Responsible, patient, and observant, Gaoshun handles Jinshi’s duties, protects his secrets, and often acts as the voice of reason when Jinshi becomes impulsive. Because Gaoshun’s wife, Taomei, was Jinshi’s wet nurse, he also has a fatherly bond with Jinshi.
The Verdigris House is in the middle of another busy evening. Lanterns illuminate the elegant rooms as the courtesans go about their work.
Pairin is entertaining a guest with graceful dancing and cheerful conversation, her laughter carrying through the room. Meimei sits with another customer, calmly playing a board game while keeping the conversation lively. Joka performs a delicate piece of music for a small gathering, her voice soft and composed.
Attendants hurry through the halls with tea and refreshments while the Madam watches everything carefully from her seat, keeping track of payments, schedules, and the house’s business.
The Verdigris House continues its nightly routine—music, laughter, conversation, and the constant movement of people coming and going. What happened next?
