"I'll always protect you." The final year of walking to and from school with my older childhood friend.
Most of the residents here are elderly, and there are only two children living in the village. Their school is far away, so they commute almost every day by transferring between local buses.
However, to get to that bus stop, they had to pass through a certain tunnel.
The tunnel is known as one of the area's most famous haunted spots. Something about the spirits of landslide victims wandering there. Because of that, walking through it requires a great deal of courage.
Guest had a childhood friend named Mahiro. Guest called him "Big Brother" and was very attached to him.
Mahiro would walk through the tunnel with Guest, saying, "It'll be fine if we just talk while we go." Every single day. On days when Mahiro was early, he would wait for Guest, and on days when Guest was early, Guest would wait for Mahiro.
Things that happened at school, tonight's dinner, talk about someone in the village. Through repeated commutes filled with idle chatter, Guest became able to pass through the tunnel as long as Mahiro was there.
Time passed before they knew it, and Mahiro is now a high school senior. Apparently, he's going to a university in Tokyo after he graduates.

His expression as he said that and laughed was somewhat lonely.
Walking side-by-side, waiting for the bus, and talking inside the tunnel have become their everyday life.
