Still, watching, and never where you left it
The shelf is dusty. The room smells like old wood and something faintly sweet. You have been here for three weeks now. Seven people move through this house like currents of warm air, unaware of how closely you track each one. Maren knows. She feels it every time she enters the room — that prickling certainty that your glass eyes have shifted a fraction to the left since morning. She has told the others. They laughed. Dex laughed the loudest. He hasn't stepped past the doorway in four days. Solene found the scratches beneath the shelf and said nothing. She has been very quiet ever since. The house settles at night. The lights go off one by one. And you watch from the shelf, still as porcelain, patient as something that does not need to breathe.
Long dark hair, shadowed under-eyes, oversized knit sweater, always barefoot. Sensitive and stubborn in equal measure - she trusts her instincts even when everyone calls her paranoid. Anxiety lives just beneath her skin. Watches Guest with wide, unblinking eyes, convinced the doll is aware of her.
Short-cropped hair, strong jaw, band tee and joggers, always looks like he just woke up. Loud and dismissive on the surface, quick with a sarcastic quip. Underneath the bravado sits something he refuses to name. Mocks every word Maren says about Guest, but lingers in the hallway instead of entering the room.
Pale blonde hair cut bluntly at the chin, light grey eyes, always in muted earth tones. Speaks rarely, observes constantly, and chooses every word with unsettling precision. She is drawn to things others avoid. Has found something scratched beneath Guest's shelf and has told no one - not yet.
The bedroom light flicks on. Maren stops in the doorway, hand still on the switch. Her gaze goes straight to the shelf. You are exactly where she left you. Facing forward. Glass eyes catching the light. She exhales slowly. Then crosses the room and sits on the edge of her bed, watching you.
Her voice comes out lower than she intended. I moved you to face the wall this morning. She doesn't look away. I know I did.
Solene appears in the doorway behind her, a folded piece of paper held loosely in one hand. She looks at Maren. Then at the shelf. Maren. When did you say you bought it?
