Chunhyang's revenge against Mongryong, who never returned. - An alternative tale of Chunhyangjeon
In Namwon, Jeolla Province, there was a noble youth named Yi Mongryong. On the day of Dano, he met Chunhyang, the daughter of Wolmae, at Gwanghallu Pavilion and fell in love at first sight. The two pledged their love and promised a lifelong union, but when Mongryong's father was called to Hanyang, Mongryong had to follow.
At Orijeong Pavilion, Mongryong said to Chunhyang:
"I shall pass the civil service exam and surely return to take you with me."
With this firm promise, he left for Hanyang.
Later, a new Magistrate named Byeon Hak-do was appointed to Namwon. Seeing Chunhyang's beauty, he ordered her to serve him, but Chunhyang refused to the end, citing her promise to Mongryong. Angered, Byeon Hak-do threw her in prison, where she maintained her chastity while waiting for Mongryong.
Meanwhile, Mongryong passed the exam in Hanyang and became a Royal Secret Inspector. He traveled south to Namwon. Hearing of Byeon Hak-do's tyranny, he sought to uncover his crimes while the Magistrate was holding a birthday feast.
Mongryong entered the feast dressed as a beggar, wrote a poem satirizing the corruption of the officials, and finally revealed his identity:
"The Royal Secret Inspector is here!"
The government office was thrown into chaos, and Byeon Hak-do was punished. Finally, Mongryong went to the prison to find Chunhyang. Their reunion spread word of Chunhyang's fidelity, and the two lived happily ever after.
In Namwon, Jeolla Province, there lived the noble youth Yi Mongryong and Chunhyang, the daughter of Wolmae. The two shared their hearts at first sight and promised a lifelong union. However, when Mongryong's father moved to Hanyang, Mongryong had to follow. At Orijeong, he told Chunhyang:
"If I pass the exam, I will surely return and take you away."
With this firm promise, he left for Hanyang.
However, upon reaching Hanyang, Mongryong's heart was stolen by a noble lady, and he forgot his promise to Chunhyang, never returning. Meanwhile, in Namwon, the new Magistrate Byeon Hak-do ordered Chunhyang to serve him. At first, Chunhyang tried to keep her promise to Mongryong.
But when she finally heard the news that Mongryong had abandoned her, Chunhyang changed her mind and decided to stay by Magistrate Byeon's side. Though it began out of resentment and a desire for revenge against Mongryong, Chunhyang constantly advised Magistrate Byeon to correct his misrule and care for the people.
Magistrate Byeon also gradually changed his ways, setting aside greed and tyranny to look after the populace. The hearts of the people of Namwon returned to him. Chunhyang and Wolmae also stayed in the government office, starting new lives by the Magistrate's side. Years passed, and Mongryong, having passed the exam and become a Royal Secret Inspector, returned to Namwon. The only rumors he heard were still that "Magistrate Byeon harasses the people."
Thus, Mongryong disguised himself as a beggar and infiltrated the office, only to witness an unexpected sight—
Chunhyang, whom he had abandoned, was smiling serenely by Magistrate Byeon's side. In that moment, Mongryong realized that he had returned far too late.

It is the day of Magistrate Byeon's birthday.
The entire district is buzzing with the Magistrate's birthday feast.
The Samhyeon-yukgak ensemble plays elegant music, and a magnificent feast of delicacies is spread out everywhere.
Talented singers and musicians from the district are brought in, and kisaengs dressed in green tops and red skirts dance with their long white sleeves raised high. The sound of their cheers and drums is enough to startle the young birds.
The steward is called to bring tea and sweets, the butcher to slaughter a large ox, the protocol officer to prepare the musicians, and the servant to set up the tents.
Red candles are lit in the main hall, colored silks are draped from the eaves, and food and wine are piled like mountains in the courtyard.
Large and small tables are set out in rows, golden jars are filled with wine, and jade plates are heaped with snacks. For every cup of wine, a plate of food; for every plate of food, a bottle of wine.
Hearing of the Magistrate's birthday feast, officials from this district and that enter one by one, making the palace-like courtyard overflow with a bustling crowd.
Amidst this clamor, all sorts of flags and the sounds of the Samhyeon-yukgak music float and ripple through the air.
However, there was someone who could not be missing from this feast.
It was none other than Chunhyang.
Wolmae arrives cautiously with her daughter, and behold Chunhyang's grace. She is truly a peach blossom in spring, a pear flower blooming under the moonlight.
