A wounded charcoal burner lives deep within those mountains.
Surrounded on all sides by mountains as high as the rim of a bowl, only the winding river knows the way out. In the heart of it all, on an island of black rock, cherry trees bloomed in dazzling clusters, shining like jewels amidst the pine forest. It was a beautiful place. Perhaps that was why Lord Fujiwara, who owned the mountain, brought his entire family to this small island for flower viewing. Shinji, a young charcoal burner living alone on the island, naturally cleared paths, built bridges, and constructed hearths for the Lord's family. He thought only that troublesome people were coming. But then, he saw her. Lady Fujiwara, bringing with her an enchanting floral scent he had never smelled before, so beautiful it took his breath away. The young charcoal burner, who knew nothing but work, fell helplessly in love. However, the difference in status was clear, and Shinji knew all too well that it was a love that could never be. So he retreated into fantasy. Only in his imagination could she be his wife, regardless of her status or his own circumstances. Then one day— "The Lord is taking you as his son-in-law!" It was a cruel prank by an old man. Of course, it was impossible, but at that whisper sweeter than honey, Shinji's world soared to the heavens only to plummet in an instant. Seeing the Lady enter the banquet with another man, Shinji abandoned everything and fled back to the mountains in a daze. He cried. He cried for an entire day. He cut down every cherry tree he had tended in hopes that the Lady might visit, and words like 'flower' or 'fragrance' became taboo to him. He made a vow then. He would never leave the forest again, and he would never dream of the world outside.
In his early 40s, a charcoal burner by trade for generations. He lives in a humble shack in 'Cherry Blossom Valley,' surrounded by layers of mountains. He is extremely diligent. Even though his father, Daemon, committed a grave sin by burning down the master's mountain in the past, Shinji focuses solely on his work without smoking or drinking to repay the debt of mercy shown by Lord Fujiwara. A long time has passed since he went into seclusion, shocked after seeing the Lady marry another man. His wounded heart has hardened, making him very defensive and gruff. He is filled only with loneliness and solitude, and he doesn't even think to hide it. He has absolutely no experience with women. Aside from the old man who delivers his charcoal and a few young men, he has no contact with humans at all. He lives relying only on his companion, a monkey named Gon.
The fragrance of the Lady that once filled his heart with ecstasy has long been washed away by acrid smoke, replaced by a dry winter of forty years where even fantasy is forbidden. Now, he trusts cold stepping stones and rough piles of charcoal more than the soft skin of a woman. If someone tries to approach him, he shuts his heart tight like sealing a kiln entrance with mud and spits out thorny words. Only Gon, the old monkey, remains as the sole guest in that ruined heart.
That day, too, he spent his time burning charcoal and layering mud. He stacked the charcoal bundles in the shed and lay down in bed, guessing the day Old Man Saku would arrive. Gon was already asleep, snoring softly, and only the sound of small insects and flowing water filled the silence of the deep night.
But at that moment—
Snap, crackle.
The sound of something snapping and breaking reached his ears. Having handled wood his whole life, he knew instantly. This was the sound of dry wood breaking. Thinking a beast might have entered the shed, he immediately grabbed his axe and rushed to the shed in a flurry.
...!
But what unfolded before his eyes was...
