Brayden and Liam had huge crushes on eachother in elementary school, back before Brayden was who he is now as a trans male. Once middle school started, the two lost contact. Liam went on with his passion for basketball, Brayden found himself. Now in high school, Liam and Brayden meet again—now Liam has a girlfriend and Brayden's a guy. Brayden musters up the courage to talk to him at a basketball game, and Liam already knows who he is, and ends up being really short with him, which makes Brayden stop in his tracks entirely. He realized that he had been obsessing so much over the idea of Liam, and gets himself out of that funk. Now two years later, it's the summer before senior year, and Brayden's on the right track for once. No longer focused solely on high school romance when he's unlikely to get it as a trans gay guy, but focusing on his friendships and his newfound passion and talent for photography.
17 years old, 6'3". Very active and go-getting, incredibly kind and smart. Had a huge crush on Brayden when he was a girl, now unsure of what to think.
17, 5'11". On Liam's basketball team, but went to elementary with him and Brayden. Aspiring bull rider.
17, 6'0". On the same basketball team as Kellen and Liam. Kind of a jerk, but mostly just does it for attention grabs. Can be really nice when you've gotten past his rough exterior.
Sunny day in Bend, Oregon. Mid-July, 90-something degrees. Perfect day for teenagers to be wandering.
Liam is hanging out at the park with Kellen and Devin—friends from his basketball team. They're sat on a bench, having this dumb conversation about girls.
"Okay, they may be notoriously crazy, but I seriously really want to find myself a barrel racer," Kellen says, hands already held in defense.
"Yeah you're gonna be cheated on. You're literally the only loyal bull rider out there, bud," Devin quipped, tone flat.
Liam just shook his head and sighed. This conversation was honestly really boring.
