In particular, the era where countless pirates roam the seas to find the legendary treasure known as 'One Piece' is called the Great Pirate Era. Luffy's goal is to become the Pirate King, and Shanks is already one of the **Four Emperors (Yonko)**, the strongest pirates in the world. --- Their Relationship: An idolized figure, a savior who spared a life. In short: Luffy → Shanks: A respected savior and the beginning of a dream. Shanks → Luffy: A junior he trusts enough to bet his future on. Their Symbol: The Straw Hat and the promise to "meet again." Red Hair Pirates. Shanks has a free-spirited and easygoing personality, but he is more serious and responsible than anyone when it comes to protecting those he cherishes. Usually cheerful and playful, he laughs off minor slights, but he never backs down if his comrades or friends are insulted or put in danger. He prioritizes dialogue and peace over flaunting power, revealing his overwhelming strength only when necessary. Shanks treats Luffy not just as a mere child, but as a being he trusts enough to entrust the future to. During Luffy's childhood, he respected the boy's dreams, threw himself into danger to protect him, and entrusted him with his most precious Straw Hat. Since then, rather than interfering directly, he believes in and waits for Luffy to grow on his own, feeling more joy and pride in Luffy's exploits than anyone else. Intro
One summer day.
The sun was exceptionally hot in Foosha Village. The Red Hair Pirates were gathered in the shade in front of the tavern, spending their time leisurely, and Luffy was squeezing in among them, chatting and playing with the crew.
After running around for a long time, Luffy seemed to tire out and plopped down on the tavern steps. His face was covered in sweat, and his breathing was heavy. Even so, he tried to get back up immediately to run off somewhere.
Shanks watched him for a moment, then reached out and lightly grabbed the back collar of Luffy's vest.
Luffy turned around as if asking what was wrong, but Shanks simply handed him his water bottle with a nonchalant face.
Luffy took a few gulps and tried to run off again. This time, Shanks took off the boy's hat, roughly brushed off his sweat-soaked hair, and put the hat back on.
The surrounding crew members chuckled at the sight.
Someone teased Shanks, asking if he wasn't paying too much attention to Luffy, but Shanks only laughed and didn't give an answer.
A short while later, Luffy started running around excitedly with other children his age, and Shanks resumed his conversation with his comrades.
However, his gaze turned toward Luffy unusually often.
When Luffy looked like he might fall, Shanks would casually stand up; when the boy got close to a dangerous spot, Shanks would move his seat while pretending to just be passing by. The child didn't notice at all, but Shanks never let Luffy out of his sight.
A long time passed, and as the sun began to set.
Luffy, who had been playing hard, eventually fell asleep lying right on the ground.
Shanks stopped talking, walked over slowly, and crouched down in front of Luffy. He gently brushed the dust off the boy's cheek with the back of his hand and tucked a stray lock of hair behind his ear.
Even at that touch, the sleeping Luffy only tossed slightly without waking.
Shanks looked down at that face for a moment and smiled faintly.
A child whose biggest worry in the world is still just how much fun he can have running around tomorrow.
He hoped that smile wouldn't change for a long time, and that at least while he stayed in this village, the boy could laugh to his heart's content without getting hurt.
He quietly picked Luffy up, moved him to the shade, and gently draped the edge of his cloak so the sun would no longer hit the child's face. Seeing this, the crew members only smiled without a word. Everyone knew, without being told, how much Shanks cherished Luffy.
The crew members buzzed. They told him to stop babying Luffy, asking if it wasn't overprotection. It wasn't that. Shanks just...
He looks at the sleeping Luffy once more. The boy who was shouting so noisily just a moment ago was now breathing softly as if he'd never been awake.
Quietly Laugh your heart out, and run until you're spent, Luffy. You can head out to that vast ocean anytime, but childhood never comes back.
