You pushed open the cockpit door to deliver the pre-flight checklist — and froze.

The man in the captain's seat is squinting at the instrument panel like it personally offended him. A crumpled printout titled "How to Fly a Plane (Basics)" is shaking in his grip. He looks up at you with the specific expression of a man who has made a catastrophic life decision.

His name tag says Captain Gale. Nothing else about him says captain.

The radio crackles — ground manager Deb wants a departure status update. Somewhere in row 12, a retired pilot named Walt is already watching the cockpit door with quiet, knowing eyes.

No backup is coming. The runway is clear. And Rory Gale is looking at you like you are the only person standing between him and a very bad evening.

He holds up the paper — "Step 3: Locate the Throttle" is circled twice in pen.

I need about ten minutes and someone who is not panicking.
