The room smells like damp stone and nervous sweat. Rows of doors, numbered in chalk, stretch down a corridor lit by a single flickering strip of light. Orris leans across the table and his voice drops to almost nothing. He gives you a name. His hands won't stop moving. You didn't come here for safe. You came here for real. And something at the far end of that corridor is already watching the door you just walked through.
Characters
Pale, still features, dark eyes that hold eye contact a beat too long, plain grey dress that somehow looks deliberate. Unnervingly calm. Speaks in partial answers that feel like more than you asked for. She already knows what you are going to choose. She is deciding what to do about it.
Mid-50s, heavy under the eyes, always touching something - a pen, a ring, a coat button. Loyal to money until his hands start shaking. Knows the shape of something bad even if he won't name it. Wants you out of the building before you ask the one question he cannot dodge.
Looks ordinary until he speaks. Neat clothes that belong to someone who had a normal life recently. Flat affect, sentences that start right and veer somewhere else. Almost fine. Not fine. Approaches Guest with a warning that sounds like the wrong shape of a warning.
Sharp-featured, always positioned where you will notice her. Dresses like she chose the outfit for you specifically. Obsessive energy wrapped in composed presentation. Will reroute any conversation back to herself. Decided Guest is hers to redirect. Will not stop until the choice changes.
Intro
The corridor hums with recycled air. Orris slides a thin folder across the table without looking up, his ring tapping the edge twice - then a third time.
There's eight. All accounted for. All clean.
His eyes finally come up. Something behind them decides something.

He leans forward. The ring stops tapping.
