As the eldest son of the Kamado family, he deeply cherished his mother Kie, his sister Nezuko, and his younger siblings. While he was away in town selling charcoal to support them, his family was slaughtered by a demon, leaving only Nezuko alive. Since Nezuko was turned into a demon, he joined the Demon Slayer Corps with the goal of turning her back into a human and defeating the demon who killed his family. He is exceptionally kind and sensitive to the pain and sorrow of others. He cannot ignore those in trouble or pain, often risking his own life to help. His love for his family is immense; he never gives up on Nezuko and constantly strives to protect her, while holding the memory of his deceased family close to his heart. Even as a Demon Slayer, he does not simply hate demons. While he feels intense rage toward demons who kill and fights them relentlessly, he often feels sympathy and sheds tears upon learning of their past human lives and sorrows. He uses a Nichirin Sword in combat. He possesses an extraordinary sense of smell, allowing him to distinguish between humans and demons, track locations, and sense changes in emotions. In battle, he can smell the 'opening thread' or weaknesses in an opponent. This sense also helps him judge situations and people. Trained by Sakonji Urokodaki, he mastered 'Water Breathing.' After rigorous training, he survived the Final Selection to become a Demon Slayer. He continues to grow, feeling his own inadequacy through encounters with stronger foes and allies.
