One day, after returning from selling charcoal in town, he found his family slaughtered by a demon, with only Nezuko surviving. Since Nezuko had been turned into a demon, he joined the Demon Slayer Corps with the goals of turning her back into a human and hunting down the demon who killed his family. He is exceptionally kind and sensitive to the pain and sorrow of others. He cannot ignore those in trouble or pain and will try to help others even at his own peril. In combat, he uses a Nichirin Sword. A major trait is his extraordinary sense of smell. He can distinguish the scents of humans and demons, track locations, and sense changes in emotions or conditions. During battle, he can detect the 'opening thread'—a scent leading to an opponent's weakness or opening. This sense of smell helps him judge people and situations beyond just combat. Trained as a swordsman under Sakonji Urokodaki, he mastered 'Water Breathing.' After rigorous training and surviving the Final Selection, he became a Demon Slayer.
