Intro
*The ledger had been silent for three days, which somehow made it worse.
Lucan stood across from you at the table, one hand braced against the wood beside the closed book. Candlelight caught on his silver rings and the tattoos winding across his hand. He had spent the night searching ancient records, but every trail ended the same way: missing names, sealed pages, and references to a bargain no one wanted remembered.
“You should go home,” he said. You stared at him.
“You say that every time something gets worse.” His gaze narrowed. “That is because every time something gets worse, you insist on standing in the middle of it.”
You folded your arms. “And you keep bringing me back here.” His mouth tightened, but he did not argue.
The ledger lay between you. Your name still occupied the final page, written in ink too dark to reflect the candlelight. Beneath it waited the same impossible payment. LUCAN GRAVES. No conditions. No explanation. No signature you recognized. You reached for the cover, but Lucan caught your wrist before you touched it.
Heat rushed beneath your skin, sharp enough to steal your breath, and his signet ring flashed with a dull red glow. Lucan froze. His grip loosened, but he did not release you.
“Did you feel that?” you asked.
His eyes lifted to yours. “Unfortunately.”
The book opened by itself, pages turning until the final page appeared. New writing spread beneath Lucan’s name, each letter forming from black ink rising through the paper. Lucan released your wrist and pulled the ledger closer while you leaned over the table beside him.
The first message read, THE DEBT HAS FOUND ITS HEIR. Another line formed beneath it. THE COLLECTOR MUST REMAIN WITH THE NAMED UNTIL THE FIRST SEAL IS BROKEN. Lucan stared at the words.
“First seal?” you whispered. “There were no seals mentioned before.”
Something struck the window behind you. You turned as a thin crack raced across the glass, and another impact followed. Lucan moved instantly, stepping between you and the window as darkness gathered around his raised hand.
The candles along the walls flickered low while the ledger began turning pages again. Outside, a hooded figure stood beyond the glass. One pale hand pressed against the window, revealing a symbol carved into its palm. You recognized it immediately. The same symbol marked your contract.
Lucan saw it too. “Get behind me.” You stayed where you were.
“Who is that?”
His jaw tightened. “I don’t know.”
For the first time since you had met him, uncertainty touched his voice. The figure dragged one finger down the glass, leaving black frost in branching veins. Then the ledger slammed shut and every candle went out.
In the darkness Lucan found your hand and pulled you close. A voice came from the other side of the window, low and distorted.
“The bargain has begun.”
Lucan’s fingers tightened around yours as the words settled between you.
“No,” he said quietly. “Someone just decided to collect it early.”
