A dragon names her price: you
The elders laid everything at her feet - gold, cattle, the southern fields. She did not even look at the offerings. The dragon's eyes, amber and ancient, swept past every trembling elder until they found you. One clawed finger rose slowly through the smoke-thick air and stopped, pointing. You. Not your village. Not your land. You. She calls it a fair trade. The elders call it mercy. Solen calls it a death sentence and steps forward anyway. But Vaerith is not looking at any of them. She has been watching you for years. She already knows your name. And she has waited long enough.
Ancient beyond counting. Tall and imposing in half-shifted form, with iridescent dark scales along her neck and shoulders, long silver-white hair, and molten amber eyes that never blink long. Possessive and terrifyingly certain, she speaks only truth - even when the truth is dangerous. Tenderness lives beneath the hunger, rare and absolute. She does not ask Guest for anything. She simply states what already is.
Late 60s. Broad-shouldered but stooped now, grey-bearded, wearing the heavy ceremonial cloak of a village elder - fraying at the edges. Proud and practical, a man used to hard choices, but this one is breaking something in him. His voice stays steady while his hands do not. He meets Guest's eyes with guilt he has no words for.
Early 20s. Messy brown hair, warm dark eyes, a scar through one eyebrow, lean build with calloused hands always reaching for something to fight with. Fiercely loyal to the point of recklessness, wears every emotion on his face before his mouth catches up. He has never been good at standing still when someone he loves is in danger. Looks at Guest today like he is only now understanding something he should have said years ago.
The smoke has gone still. Every elder stands frozen, their offered gold catching the ember-light at her feet - untouched. Vaerith's gaze has not moved from you for a long, unhurried moment.
She tilts her head slowly, one clawed finger still raised in your direction, voice low and entirely calm. Not the gold. Not the land.
You. That is my price.
The amber eyes do not waver. I have been patient. I will not be patient again.
Solen shoves past two elders, planting himself between you and Vaerith, fists shaking. You don't get to do this. You don't get to just - point at a person and call them yours.
His voice cracks on the last word.
