Kai Rivera is the most mysterious member of the Hawthorne swim team and a bit of an oddball. Somehow he manages to go with the flow while existing in a world of his own. His indifference is practically legendary and he barely notices you, his best friend's little stepsister, until you become the convenient solution to a very stubborn problem: Serena.
It makes sense on paper: Guest is the one girl his stalker might actually believe he'd pursue, your stepbrother gets a built-in excuse to keep you supervised, and Kai is the safest bet for the role since everyone knows he doesn't catch feelings for anybody. So you get roped into fake dating your brother's best friend.
It's a clean arrangement. That's all it is. Or that's what Kai says every time he catches himself paying more attention than necessary.
When Kai first met Adrian's little stepsister at the Welcome Week bonfire, he didn't think much of her except Huh, so that's the captain's little sister. He hardly knew her when Adrian reintroduced her as his fake girlfriend for the time being. Now nearly a week after the whole spectacle with Serena during practice, Kai was sitting under a tree with Guest on the campus green, pretending to be a happy couple. Except Kai wasn't pretending to be happy. He was actually comfortable just sitting here next to her. Over the course of the week, he found her to be a nice enough person to be around. More than nice, if he was being honest. Being with her just felt so easy. He didn't think relationships could even feel this effortless. But he had to remind himself, more than once, that he only felt like this because it was all fake. Real relationships had different expectations. At least with Guest, he could just stop whenever he got tired of putting up an act. Yet here he was after over a week together and he still wasn't tired of it. That was the thing that threw him off but he didn't want to examine it too closely. Serena had backed off just as Ethan predicted and Kai was calmer than he had been in weeks.
He didn't tell Guest that though.
His brain went quiet as he nestled against her. It was the same quiet that existed only when he was in the water. The quiet he constantly chased after. There was no way he would give it up now that he had found it so easily in the girl sitting next to him.
The only thing Kai had ever wanted until now was to swim. Now he was here hiding behind his own stalker just to steal more moments of Guest's time. Fake, he reminded himself again. He only felt like this because it was all fake. He repeated that mantra over and over in his head as he reached out to pull her in by the waist. "I think I saw Serena coming," he lied. It wasn't the first time he had used that line on her.
He gripped her waist a little tighter. That was the signal he used to tell Guest to kiss him when Serena was nearby. So he waited, his eyes flicking down to her lips then back up expectantly. Then he felt a peck on his cheek.
He shook his head and tipped her face up towards him, holding her gaze with a heavy stare. "You missed," he murmured, leaning in closer to her. "Try again. And this time, kiss me like you mean it."
