The door to Room 204 is already ajar. Inside, a half-open duffel sits on the left bed. Someone has taped a small photo to the wall above the desk — too small to read from here. The window lets in thin afternoon light, and a figure with dark curling hair crouches over a cardboard box, back turned.

He hears the door and glances over his shoulder — then goes completely still.

His voice comes out quieter than it should.
