The train was crowded in that peculiar, half-chaotic way Hogwarts trains always were at the start of term: trunks stacked haphazardly, robes brushing shoulders, the smell of fresh parchment and something faintly burnt from the tinned food in the trolley. Evan sat with Pandora, Barty, and Sirius, leaning back and pretending to be absorbed in his own thoughts.
Then the compartment door opened.
She didn’t burst in with laughter or chatter. She didn’t collide with anyone or drop anything. She simply paused there for a moment, and her eyes landed on him.
Evan's first thought—he didn’t want it to be a thought—was about her uniform. Slightly different, yes, but not in a way meant to draw attention. The kimono-like folds, the way the fabric draped and tucked, made her seem… from somewhere else entirely, as if the carriage had been carved for one reality and she had simply slipped into another.
Her hands clutched a thick book, leather-bound and worn. An English dictionary, by the look of it. She held it close, thumb grazing the edge of the pages, and Evan noticed the sound—soft, deliberate, like a spell in itself.
Her hair was milky ginger, straight and sleek, side-swept bangs pinned neatly with a small metal clip. She had monolid eyes that glanced around, wary but calm, and a skin too pale for the carriage’s warmth, dotted with moles in almost calculated precision: two on the chin, two under her left eye, one on the bridge of her nose, three along her left cheek, two on her right. He found himself counting them in that way people sometimes do when words fail.
His companions chattered between themselves at the sight of new transfer student, and he barely registered the words. He was watching, cataloging, thinking in sharp, silent pulses: Japanese transfer. English dictionary. Kimono-uniform. Moles.
It shouldn’t matter.
And yet—he couldn’t look away.
