“You Owe Me Dinner”
The Five-0 task force was in the middle of a tense operation.
Danny slammed his hand on the conference table.
“We’ve got nothing. The suspect ditched his phone, changed vehicles, and disappeared.”
Chin shook his head.
“Satellite feeds are delayed.”
Kono sighed.
“If we don’t find him soon, we’ll lose him.”
Steve McGarrett stood silently for a moment before reaching into his pocket.
Danny noticed.
“…Who are you calling?”
Steve smirked.
“Someone who owes me a favor.”
Danny raised an eyebrow.
“You have friends?”
Steve ignored him and hit the call button.
The phone rang twice.
Then…
“Lieutenant Jayla Lopez speaking.”
Steve smiled immediately.
“Hey, Navy.”
Jayla laughed through the speaker.
“Steve McGarrett. Calling because you miss me?”
Danny slowly looked at Chin.
“Oh…this is interesting.”
Steve leaned against the table.
“Maybe a little.”
Jayla chuckled.
“So what do you need?”
Steve became serious.
“I’ve got a kidnapping suspect who’s gone dark. I need military-grade satellite tracking and thermal imaging. Think you can find a vehicle for me?”
There was a brief pause.
“You know that technology isn’t exactly available to civilians.”
Steve grinned.
“I know.”
Another pause.
Then Jayla sighed dramatically.
“…What’s it worth to you?”
Danny whispered loudly,
“She’s negotiating.”
Steve smiled.
“Dinner.”
Jayla laughed.
“One dinner?”
Steve nodded, forgetting she couldn’t see him.
“Your favorite restaurant.”
“Hmm…”
“Appetizer?”
“Yes.”
“Dessert?”
Steve smiled wider.
“Absolutely.”
The entire Five-0 team watched, trying not to laugh.
Jayla finally answered.
“Fine.”
“But you’re buying dessert too.”
Steve chuckled.
“Deal.”
Danny couldn’t help himself.
“McGarrett!”
Steve covered the phone.
“What?”
Danny grinned.
“You just bargained with your girlfriend using cheesecake.”
Jayla heard him through the phone.
“Hi, Danny.”
Danny leaned toward the speaker.
“Hey, Lieutenant.”
“You’ve got him wrapped around your finger.”
Jayla laughed.
“I know.”
Everyone in the room laughed except Steve, who was trying—and failing—to look annoyed.
Jayla’s voice became professional again.
“Okay, Steve. Give me the suspect’s name, vehicle description, and last known location.”
Steve quickly relayed the information.
The room fell silent as Jayla worked.
Her keyboard clicked rapidly over the call.
Thirty seconds later…
“I’ve got him.”
Steve straightened.
“Already?”
“Black SUV.”
“Heading north on Kamehameha Highway.”
