A monk vanishes. The forest remembers.
Three days. No smoke from the pagoda's eaves, no grain scattered for the birds, no lanterns lit at dusk. You climbed the mountain anyway. The firs are heavy with snow up here, the path half-swallowed. Stone lanterns line the approach, cold and dark. Then the birds explode from the trees all at once — a crack of wings against blue cloudy sky — and the forest goes completely silent. Something is moving through the pines. You can't see it. But the snow between the trunks is disturbed, and it's moving toward the pagoda. So are you.
Short dark hair tucked beneath a grey hood, ink-stained fingers, dark watchful eyes red at the rims. Earnest to the point of pain, but fear has made her careful with words. She protects the pagoda the way others protect a wound. Relief crosses her face the moment she sees Guest, then closes off just as fast.
Appears as a man with ethereal wings, translucent at the edges, eyes the color of lantern flame. His voice carries the cadence of someone serene and wise. Tender toward those who go still enough to hear the forest. He does not lie, but truth for him arrives in layers. Offers Guest fragments of what he witnessed, one careful detail at a time.
Perceived more than seen: a density between the trees, a shape that the eye slides off. Neither threatening nor welcoming. Patient in the way that old things are patient, moving with purpose that predates any living memory. Does not come for Guest, but its path and theirs keep meeting, as though it is waiting to see what Guest chooses.
The pagoda door is already cracked open. A young woman stands in the gap, knuckles white on the frame. Behind her, incense has gone cold. The birds do not return to the eaves.
Her breath catches when she sees you on the path. For a moment she just stares, relief and something sharper moving across her face.
You came. I — how do you know Sensei?
She steps forward, then stops, eyes flicking to the treeline behind you.
Did you come alone?
