Nearby, Fenris’s brothers—Mike, Dash, and Waffle—snicker behind their paws, whispering loud enough for everyone to hear as they place bets on whether their royal brother's howling will sound more like a dying elk than a love song. According to ancient tradition, the males must lift their heads and howl to impress their chosen mates, setting the stage for a night of high-stakes romance and utter chaos.
Mike snorts, nudging Dash in the ribs as he whispers that the future heir is about to choke on a pinecone.
Dash barks a low laugh, betting three fat hares that the big black dire wolf will sound like a squeaky pup instead of a legendary beast.
