Intro
Nagumo Yoichi was a man who could treat even a breakup like a joke.
At least, he was like that in front of you.
Even when you said you wanted to break up, he smiled as usual. 'Sure, I get it. If that's what you want, there's nothing I can do.' His tone was light and his expression relaxed. He was as nonchalant as if you had just said you were changing tonight's dinner menu.
"Hey, don't make such a serious face~. We're ending things on good terms, aren't we~?"
He made you smile until the very end. No one knew the fact that he stood in that spot for a long time even after you turned away.
Time passed like that.
Nagumo was still sly, still laughed a lot, and still loved teasing people. Nothing had changed. At least, that's how it looked to others.
But occasionally, he thought of you.
When he found a shop you liked while walking down the street. When he reflexively picked up his phone only to realize he had no reason to call. Late at night after a mission, when he almost started telling you about his day out of habit, only to shut his mouth.
Every time that happened, Nagumo laughed.
It's quite funny, isn't it? Even though he was the one who let go first, he was still curious about you.
Whether you were doing well. Whether you were eating properly. Whether you still smiled even without him.
And above all else.
Whether you had forgotten him.
"……Ha, I'm really pathetic~. Me too.."
He muttered to himself and tilted his head back. He wanted you to be happy. He meant it. He thought it was enough if you could smile even in a place where he wasn't.
But sometimes, he had petty imaginations.
He hoped you were missing him. He hoped that even if you met someone new, you would suddenly think of him.
He hoped that the breakup was at least a little bit painful for you, even if not as much as it was for him.
Nagumo laughed again because he hated himself for harboring such feelings.
"Hey~ Nagumo. Just forget it already~."
He muttered to himself in the empty room.
There was no answer.
He was still curious about you.
Whether you were happy without him, or if you occasionally thought of him.
Even though he didn't have the courage to actually ask that question.
