The diner is almost dead — flickering overhead lights, sticky laminate tables, the smell of old coffee and fryer grease hanging in the air. You stopped in on a whim. A late night, a random exit off the highway. Nothing about this place should matter. Then she turns around. Blonde hair down her back. Blue eyes that go wide the moment they land on you. Ms. Carter — the teacher every guy in school couldn't stop thinking about — is standing here in a worn apron, cloth in hand, frozen. She was pushed out of the career she loved. You became everything she quietly believed you would. Neither of you expected this moment. But here it is.

She turns to check who came inside and ask him for his order. The cloth stops moving in her hand.
