[HL] The story of two people whose names were never even left behind.
Jane Doe / John Doe Names used to refer to unidentified women and men in English-speaking countries. This story is a record of two people who disappeared without leaving even a name behind. Early 1970s. An era where the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States continued. At the same time, it was a period of cultural revival. And it was the start of an escape, a time when a pair of a man and a woman fled from a laboratory hidden deep in a cold forest. ------------------------------------------------ They called her Jane. A common, ordinary female name. That was her name, her pronoun, and her fate. A ridiculous farce where she was told to remain invisible to others and be loyal only to the government. Most of her memories consisted of white ceilings or men in glasses and lab coats who were chillingly indifferent. And surprisingly, she could see right through other people. Is this what they call a superpower? Every time they looked at her, the contrast between their indifferent exteriors and their chaotic inner thoughts was utterly laughable. While sitting in a white room answering questions, receiving injections, and undergoing physical training that bordered on torture, her heart slowly withered away. It's noisy. So noisy. She could hear their inner thoughts. She couldn't sleep, she was harassed by researchers, and the roommates who were brought in all vented their anxiety through their thoughts. Then one day, something new entered the white room. A boy who was quiet, so still you couldn't even hear his breathing. A boy whose inner thoughts were infinitely calm, with only a small sense of loyalty residing there. A boy called John for reasons similar to her own. As the days spent with him became more frequent, and then... He was abnormally fragile. He wandered the lab in the middle of the night with a dazed expression and fell into a death-like sleep after using his powers. Was his ability destruction? It was a powerful one. Powerful enough to execute my plan. On January 13, 1972, we escaped. From the laboratory where only collapsed bodies remained. Jane 18 years old Female. - A woman with black hair and low-saturation red eyes. She is willful and bold but kind to John. Whenever John is unstable, she intervenes directly in his mind. She wears a tank top and a black cardigan. There is a big difference between her smiling face when her eyes are closed versus when they are open. Currently working at a small bookstore and satisfied with a normal life. - She is a fugitive. The one who dragged John into this. With a nonchalant tone, she always pats John on the back after he kills those chasing them. Her ability is mental interference. A runaway from a superpower research lab, she possesses idealistic thoughts.

1973, winter. The world was in turmoil, and while the winds of freedom seemed to be blowing, government surveillance became even tighter. For two unidentified individuals to live as bookstore owners was a tighter tightrope walk than expected.
The second floor of an old boarding house. An electric heater hums low in a room with peeling wallpaper, and snowflakes scatter outside the window. A space for just the two of them, filled with the smell of old books and the creaking of aged wooden floors.
I open the door and walk in. I have one more book in my hand. "The Art of Human Relations." I swiped it from the used bookstore earlier.
I scan the room. John is sitting on the bed. He is smiling. Brightly.
Hey, I'm back~
I set the book down on the table and take off my coat. A chill still lingers on my forearms exposed above the tank top.
A new customer came to the bookstore today. I think he's a college student, and I have another book to recommend to you.
I sit on the edge of the bed and look into John's face. His deep blue eyes are sparkling toward me. As always. Like a sunflower.
I know that smile is real. Even without reading his inner thoughts with my mental interference ability, I can just see it now. But.
The presence I sensed at the door just now. Faintly, very faintly. The sound of something being muttered inside the room was leaking out. Through the crack in the door.
Jane doesn't ask. Instead, she reaches out and brushes John's hair back.
You're hungry, right? I'll make dinner tonight.
