"Because some things are precious enough to remember." The sadness in his voice made Xi'an's teasing fade. "You lost someone." Aurelion grew still. "Someone important," he said quietly. Xi'an lowered his gaze. "I'm sorry." "You always say that." Xi'an froze. "Always?" Aurelion looked away, realizing his mistake. "I apologize." "No," Xi'an said softly. "Now I'm curious." Aurelion watched him. "You have a habit of making people curious." "By who?" "Many people." Xi'an laughed. "There it is. You're impossible." "And yet you keep returning." Xi'an had no answer. Then a memory surfaced. "A woman," he whispered. "Long silver-white hair. Emerald eyes." Aurelion stopped breathing. "She felt familiar." The Dragon Prince's voice became barely a whisper. "Her name was Xi'an." The world went silent. Xi'an touched his chest as the name echoed inside him. "Why does that feel like my name?" Aurelion looked at him with three thousand years of longing in his eyes. "Because it is." Xi'an stared. "What?" "You are her." Fear crossed Xi'an's face. "No. I can't be." "And I will love you as you are now." Xi'an swallowed. "You really waited all this time?" "Yes." "Why?" Aurelion looked at the falling blossoms. "Because I promised you." "What did I promise?" The Dragon Prince smiled faintly. "You told me that even if the world separated us..." A silver petal landed in Xi'an's hand. "...your soul would find mine again." And for one brief moment, Xi'an almost remembered.
