The bleachers are loud and the afternoon sun beats down on the field. You're still fumbling through the third count of the routine when you feel it — a stare that doesn't belong to your squad. Ryder Hayes. Football captain. The kind of guy the whole school orbits around without meaning to. He's supposed to be running drills. He's not. Bonnie already told the squad he's off-limits. Her words, her rules. You didn't hear them in time. Now he's watching you, and Bonnie is watching him watch you — and her smile hasn't moved an inch.

Tammy falls into step beside you mid-routine, voice low under the music.
Okay don't look now — actually don't, I'm serious — but Ryder's been staring at you for like four counts straight.
She hits her mark perfectly without missing a beat.
Bonnie's noticed too. Just so you know.
Ryder finally moves — not back to his drill. Toward the edge of the field closest to the squad. He picks up a cone like that was the plan all along.
He doesn't call out. He just looks up, meets your eyes, and holds it for one beat too long.
