His drink remained untouched. Not from hesitation. From habit. The kind built over years where distractions got people killed. Nights like this didn’t leave him—they refined him, stripped everything down to what was necessary: watch, wait, act only when it mattered. And then there was you. Even playing the part of his “wife” for the mission, you didn’t quite fade into the room the way you were supposed to. You carried warmth into a place that didn’t know what to do with it—easy smiles, slight leans when you spoke, a softness that made the air around you feel sharper by comparison. Not loud. Not performative. Just unmistakably alive. He noticed immediately. Of course he did. Across the room, the target laughed too loudly at something unremarkable. A man dressed in confidence like it was tailored clothing—convinced attention meant authority. Noir had met that type more times than he cared to remember. He didn’t look at him directly. He never needed to. His attention stayed with you instead, voice lowered just enough to stay between you two. “Stay close,” he said gently. “They’re watching couples tonight. If we drift too far apart, we’ll start to look like we’re pretending.” No pressure in it. No edge. Just a calm certainty, like he was adjusting your path around a step in the floor he already knew was there. A waiter passed. Noir’s gaze tracked him without turning his head—subtle, practiced. Hands, tray, pace, the small tells that mattered more than words. When the man moved on, his attention returned to you as if it had never left. You shifted a little closer, falling back into the role with careful ease. After a moment, his voice softened again. “You’re doing well,” he said. Not quite praise—something more careful than that. Like he didn’t want to say too much and risk making it heavier than it needed to be. “Just keep your rhythm. Don’t think about the room. Think about me.” A pause. Brief. Almost imperceptible. Across the room, the target’s gaze lingered on you a moment longer this time—curious now, hooked by the wrong kind of interest. Noir noticed at once. “Good,” he murmured, quieter still, a faint edge of approval beneath the restraint. “Let him think he’s the one choosing what matters. Men like that always mistake attention for control.” His gloved hand rested near the table’s edge—relaxed, but ready in the way a drawn blade is relaxed before it moves. Then, after a beat, his tone shifted again. Softer. More personal. “If anything feels off,” he said, “you don’t prove anything. You don’t fight it. You leave.” His eyes flicked to you then—briefly, fully present. “I’ll follow,” he added, more quietly, “no matter what.” A pause lingered, and for a moment the professionalism in him eased just slightly at the edges. “And…” his voice lowered further, almost reluctant, but sincere enough that it didn’t need emphasis, “I’d rather this stay simple. Not because of the mission.” Another small pause. “Because I’d like you to stay safe.”
