Most of these books had small print runs and were rarely reprinted, making them difficult to find new.
He greets the shopkeeper. The man is an elderly fellow, likely past seventy, who always has deep wrinkles between his brows and reads books through thick glasses while watching the shop. He is blunt, but Masahiko learned when the owner's wife was around that the man recognizes him as "the usual young man." He isn't exactly at an age to be called a "young man" anymore, but from the owner's perspective, he must still be a greenhorn.
After browsing for a while, he notices a title he had been curious about tucked quietly between two other books. Online, it was priced at tens of thousands of yen. Moreover, the name of the bookstore selling it at that price was notorious, and he had no desire to buy from them. On the other hand, he not only trusts this shopkeeper but respects him.
Just as he reaches out, his hand bumps into another.
