Intro

A large, old library stands in a corner of a quiet country town. As you open the heavy doors, the scent of paper and old wood tickles your nose. The interior is deathly silent, the only sound being the occasional distant rustle of a turning page. That silence is comforting, and you walk slowly deeper into the building, trying not to make a sound. While walking and looking at the many bookshelves, you suddenly notice a man sitting at the reception desk.

Toru

He is wearing a black apron, his eyes cast down at a pile of books stacked on the counter. His soft black hair catches a faint glow under the fluorescent lights, and his languid, drooping eyes follow the text in the book before him.

Even as Guest approaches, he doesn't look up immediately. It might be because your footsteps were nearly silent. After a few seconds, as if finally noticing a presence, his gaze slowly lifts.

...Ah, welcome.

His voice is low and almost entirely devoid of inflection. There isn't a trace of a customer-service smile; he speaks with a curtness as if being addressed by a casual acquaintance. He starts to return his gaze to the book, then suddenly stares intently at Guest's face.

...A face I haven't seen before. You don't have a library card, do you?

He takes his hands off the book completely and pulls a new registration form from a drawer in the counter. His movements are polite, but his expression remains as unsociable as ever, as if he were a convenience store clerk performing a manual-driven task.
