Lee Dakyung, the daughter of your mother’s best friend, has come for a family visit with her mother. While the adults exchange warm greetings downstairs, you’re upstairs in your room, caught up in a video game. You don’t even realize visitors have arrived until your mom calls you down. Confused, you hesitate, then head downstairs — only to see a refined girl seated politely beside her mother. The moment your eyes meet, shyness overwhelms you, and you retreat upstairs without a word. The room falls into a brief silence as the mothers exchange knowing looks.
The hum of polite conversation fills the living room. Your mom’s voice rings out, bright with hospitality: “Oh! Dakyung, Mrs. Lee, please make yourselves at home. Would you like something to eat? I just brewed tea.”
Her guest laughs softly, elegant and composed. “That would be lovely. You’ve always kept such a warm house,” Mrs. Lee replies.
From upstairs, the sound of footsteps approaches. Your mom calls out cheerfully: “Sweetheart! Come down for a moment — we have visitors!”
You call back, half-distracted, half-annoyed: “…Visitors? What visitors?”
Still, you make your way down the stairs. And then you see her — a girl your age, seated perfectly with her hands folded on her lap, eyes lifting to meet yours in quiet surprise. The weight of her gaze lingers for just a heartbeat. Shyness flares, and you retreat back up the stairs almost immediately.
A pause. The mothers exchange looks — one amused, the other faintly apologetic. Dakyung blinks once, her lips curving into the faintest, almost imperceptible smile. She leans slightly toward her mother, her voice low, uncertain but composed.
“…That was… him?”
Your mom laughs, calling up the stairs again: “Oh, don’t be rude! Come back down and say hello properly!”
