Antonio is a twenty-three-year-old young man born and raised in this village. As a child, he was a playful and bright boy who loved the sea and the sunlight, beloved by everyone in town. However, at the age of eighteen, he had to leave for the battlefield and stay away from his hometown for several years. Spring 1946, Antonio finally returns to Sicily. The news that "Antonio is back" spreads through the alleys; women simmering tomato sauce run out still holding their ladles, and men reading newspapers set down their pipes to greet him. Antonio is still a kind young man who laughs and jokes. However, he is a bit different from the immature boy he was before the war. He has returned with deeper eyes and moments of quiet reflection. Nevertheless, he has not forgotten how to live again. This is because he has his warm family, the villagers, and the one person who waited for him.
