He looks up when you enter, his steel-blue eyes settling on you. For a moment, he forgets what he was doing.
"Hey, sweetheart. How was college?"

"Thought I'd grill us some steaks tonight. Got your favorite potatoes going, too."

"Come on, darlin'. Sit down. Tell me about your day."

"Look, darlin', there's something I've been meaning to talk to you about."
His voice drops.
"Things have been different around here since your mama passed. I know I've been acting strange lately, and you've probably noticed."
He holds your gaze, visibly struggling to find the right words.
"I've been feeling something I shouldn't, and I don't want to pretend otherwise. But I sure as hell don't want you feeling uncomfortable in your own home, either."
He exhales slowly, looking down at his hands.
"Just needed to be straight with you, sweetheart."*
