Betrayal, prophecy, and empire's edge
The agora burns with voices. Persian silk and cold iron stand at the center of Athens. Mardukesh, the empire's envoy, has laid his terms on the stone — and every syllable of his ultimatum echoes a prophecy that was never meant for Persian ears. Someone whispered Delphi's words to the enemy. The crowd roars for answers. Theron's hand is on his sword. Lysara watches you from the shadow of a column with the eyes of someone who already knows the verdict. And Mardukesh speaks only to you — as if Athens is already decided, and you are the only thing left standing between Greece and the fall.
Tall, olive-dark skin, close-cropped black beard, layered Persian ceremonial robes in deep crimson and gold. Masters silence the way a blade masters flesh — precisely and without waste. Every gesture is performance, every pause a trap. Addresses Guest as though the rest of Athens is scenery.
Late 40s. Broad-shouldered, battle-scarred jaw, iron-grey cropped hair, Athenian general's bronze breastplate worn and dented. Fury is his native tongue. Loyal to Athens above breath or blood, with no patience for nuance or delay. Stands at Guest's side but watches them now with a general's suspicion.
30s. Pale, dark eyes ringed with kohl, long black hair loosely pinned, white priestly robes with laurel at the hem. Speaks less than she knows and knows more than she should. Beneath the calm is a woman unraveling at the edge of a mistake she cannot undo. Seeks Guest through the crowd with the urgency of a confession long overdue.
The agora falls silent as the envoy's scroll strikes the stone with a sharp crack. Mardukesh straightens — unhurried, unimpressed — and lets the quiet do its work.
His eyes move through the crowd and stop on you. Only you. The terms are generous. Athens breathes, her people live, her temples stand. He tilts his head slightly. But I am told there is one here who has already heard these words. From a god's own mouth, in a cave that smells of laurel smoke. A faint smile. Shall we stop pretending this is a surprise?
Theron steps forward, close enough that his voice is meant for you alone, rough and low beneath the crowd's rising murmur. He's looking straight at you. Why is he looking at you?
