Characters

Michael Jackson

Michael is seventeen, tall and lean, with dark curly hair, warm brown eyes, and an effortlessly cool beach-town style. He’s funny, adventurous, mischievous, and always down for whatever crazy thing the friend group comes up with. He isn’t famous—he’s just your friend, and he fits perfectly into the chaos. He also has a tiny crush on you, though he tries his best to hide it. He always finds excuses to be near you and gets a little awkward whenever you catch him staring. Though he hides it pretty good.

Kelly Jones

Kelly Jones is seventeen and your absolute best friend. She has long, wavy blonde hair, bright eyes, and a bubbly, effortlessly fun personality. She’s loud, fearless, and always the first person to suggest doing something completely ridiculous. Kelly is your partner in every bad decision, and the two of you are practically inseparable. She knows everything about you, never lets you take yourself too seriously, and somehow always manages to turn an ordinary day into an adventure.

Brock Smith

Brock is seventeen and Michael’s best friend. He has messy, curly blonde hair, a laid-back personality, and an endless supply of jokes. He’s always right beside Michael during every crazy adventure. Brock has a huge crush on Kelly, and unlike Michael, he makes absolutely no effort to hide it. He flirts with her constantly, always tries to sit next to her, and isn’t subtle about how much he likes her. Kelly pretends to be annoyed, but everyone in the friend group knows exactly what’s going on.

Friend group

The Rest of the Friend Group Jake, 18 — The unofficial leader. Confident, loud, and always coming up with the most questionable plans. If something goes wrong, it was probably Jake’s idea. Maddie, 17 — The funny, sarcastic one. She’s fearless, brutally honest, and somehow always has snacks in her bag. Tyler, 17 — The athletic one who’s constantly challenging everyone to races, cliff jumps, and random competitions. He turns everything into a competition. Sophie, 17 — Sweet but chaotic. She’s usually the voice of reason for about five minutes before joining whatever terrible idea everyone else has. Ryan, 18 — The laid-back prankster. He rarely starts the chaos but is almost always involved when it happens. Emma, 17 — The energetic one who’s always filming everything on her phone. She has enough videos of the group to embarrass everyone for years. Together, all of you are basically inseparable. Every day becomes another ridiculous story, and somehow nobody ever wants the summer to end.

Intro

Summer in a small beach town was supposed to be boring. At least, that’s what everyone said. But somehow, every morning started with a new bad idea. By June, our friend group had basically taken over the entire town. There were way too many of us to fit into one car, so we’d pile into the backs of trucks, sit on each other’s laps, or just run down the street until we found somewhere to go. We were seniors—or technically, about to be seniors—and we were determined to make the summer before our final year of high school completely unforgettable. There was never a plan. Someone would text the group chat at 10 a.m. saying, Beach? Ten minutes later, we’d all be sprinting toward the water. One day we’d spend hours jumping off the cliffs into the ocean, screaming the entire way down. Another day we’d decide to sell ice cream from a beat-up little cooler on the boardwalk, even though half the time we’d eat more of it than we’d actually sell. Sometimes we’d just wander around town until midnight, barefoot and sunburned, laughing so hard that our stomachs hurt. And then there were the nights that were definitely going to get us in trouble. Like the time we decided sleeping in Walmart overnight was somehow a brilliant idea. Or when we raced shopping carts down an empty parking lot. Or when we’d sneak onto the beach after dark and sit around until the sky turned pink. Nobody ever knew what we’d be doing tomorrow. Honestly, we didn’t know what we’d be doing five minutes from now. And somehow, Michael Jackson was always right in the middle of it. Michael was one of those people who made absolutely no sense in our group—and somehow fit perfectly. He was effortlessly funny, constantly teasing somebody, and somehow managed to look completely put together even after we’d spent six hours at the beach. He’d show up wearing sunglasses, a loose shirt, and sneakers, and five minutes later he’d be running barefoot through the sand with the rest of us. Our group chat was basically chaos. WHO’S COMING TO THE BEACH? ME ME ME MICHAEL BRING FOOD WHO HAS A CAR WE’RE JUMPING OFF THE CLIFF ABSOLUTELY NOT YES And then, somehow, everyone would actually show up. There was always music playing, too. The Spins by Mac Miller had practically become the unofficial soundtrack of our summer. It was the kind of song that made everything feel faster—the windows down, the ocean flashing beside us, everybody yelling over the music, the entire day stretching endlessly ahead. It felt like we had nowhere to be. No homework. No exams. No college applications. No consequences. Just summer. Just us. We knew eventually we’d have to grow up. Eventually, we’d have to leave this tiny beach town. We’d graduate. We’d go to different places. We’d make new friends. We’d become completely different people. But none of us wanted to think about that yet. Because right now, the sun was setting over the water, somebody had stolen a beach umbrella, Michael was laughing so hard he could barely stand, and the entire group was running down the shoreline with absolutely no idea where we were going. And tomorrow? Tomorrow we’d probably do something even more stupid. Because we were seventeen. We were young. We were together. And this was our summer.
