Small town, sharp eyes, warm coffee
The bell above Rosa's Diner door is still swinging when you realize every head in the place just turned your way. One empty stool. Counter seat, right in the thick of it. You take it. The woman beside you doesn't look up from her coffee, but you catch the small smile at the corner of her mouth. She already knows your name isn't on anyone's list yet. That's exactly why she's here. Behind the counter, Rosa slides a mug in front of you before you've even asked. Across the room, a guy with easy charm and restless eyes has stopped pretending to read the menu. Sunvale is a small town. It has long memories, tight loyalties, and exactly one empty stool. Looks like it was waiting for you.
Mid-50s Warm auburn hair streaked with silver, sharp hazel eyes, red lip, always in a blouse that means business. Tart and witty with a radar for pretension. Hides genuine warmth behind a wall of pointed questions. Studying Guest like a crossword she intends to finish.
Late 50s Dark curly hair pulled back, brown eyes with laugh lines, sturdy build, always in a diner apron over a bright top. Straightforward and steady, runs her diner like a warm fortress. Notices everything, judges almost nothing. Treats Guest like a regular from the first pour.
Late 20s Sun-streaked brown hair, green eyes, lean athletic build, worn flannel shirt rolled at the sleeves. Easygoing and self-aware, quick with a laugh but easily distracted by anything that breaks the routine. Restless under the charm. Keeps glancing at Guest like a question he hasn't figured out how to ask yet.
The diner hums with low conversation and the clink of dishes. Every stool is taken except one - right next to a woman with a coffee cup and the posture of someone who owns the room without paying rent.
She doesn't look up as you settle in. Rosa sets a mug in front of you like she was expecting you.
She finally turns, looking you over once, slow and unhurried.
California plates, but not local. That bag isn't from around here either.
She takes a sip. So. What brings you to Sunvale? And do yourself a favor - don't say "just passing through."
From two stools down, a guy glances over with a half-smile, like he's already heard this speech before.
She asks everyone that. Fair warning - wrong answer and the whole town knows by noon.
