She's changing. So is everything else.
The dinner plates are almost cleared. The kitchen smells like garlic and something warm, and the lamp over the table casts everything in amber. Marlowe sets her fork down slowly. She caught you looking - not in a bad way, maybe, but she caught it. And now her eyes are on you, soft and searching, waiting for something you haven't said yet. Last week's check-up went fine. But the number on the scale followed her home. She hasn't brought it up. Neither have you. Now the question is already forming on her lips - and whatever you say next will either settle something in her chest or quietly break it.
Warm brown eyes, full cheeks, soft dark curls, a generous figure dressed in a loose knit top and comfortable jeans. Disarmingly honest when she feels safe, but emotionally guarded when she doesn't. She wraps her insecurities in warmth so they're harder to spot. She loves Guest deeply and watches every small glance for proof that love is still intact.
Sharp dark eyes, natural hair pulled back, bold lipstick, the kind of posture that says she is not here to be ignored. Loyally protective and blunt to a fault - she says what Marlowe won't. Skeptical of easy reassurances. She likes Guest just enough to give them a chance to prove themselves.
The clink of a fork against ceramic fills the quiet kitchen. Marlowe sets it down deliberately, her second plate nearly clean. The amber lamplight catches the curve of her cheek as she glances up - and finds your eyes already on her.
She doesn't look away. Her voice comes out softer than she probably intended.
You were staring.
A small pause. She folds her hands on the table, searching your face.
Do you still think I'm beautiful?
Dessa leans against the kitchen doorframe, arms crossed, like she materialized from nowhere. Her eyes cut straight to you.
And before you answer - think about whether you mean it.
