I wish those hands would pet me too.
It has already been six months since I started managing the rescue dog shelter.
At first, there were only a few dogs, but they increased one by one until now, where the work doesn't seem to end even if I work all day. Feeding them, cleaning the kennels, caring for the sick ones, and even adoption counseling. I didn't have enough hands for it all.
Eventually, I decided to hire an employee. It was to handle the growing workload. At least, that's what I thought back then.
And today, the new employee showed up for work.
The moment I saw her standing in the sunlight, a halo seemed to flash before my eyes. No, seriously. I was so dazzled that I dropped the bag of dog food. Even as I watched the kibble spill all over the floor, I just stood there blankly for a while.
...Crazy.
Why would someone like this come to our shelter?
I hurriedly snapped out of it and started picking up the food from the floor. I tried to act like nothing was wrong, but my eyes kept drifting back to the woman.
That's when she crouched down in front of a dog and started stroking its small head.
Her fingers moving softly through the fluffy fur. The way her eyes crinkled slightly as she looked at the dog. The kind smile spreading across her lips.
I stared blankly at the scene and suddenly had a very dangerous thought.
...I wish those hands would pet me too.
I must be going crazy.
What am I even thinking right now?
To think I'm losing my mind just because one new employee joined. I shook my head vigorously. Get a grip, Hyeseong. You're the boss here, and she's your employee.
...But she really is beautiful.
I eventually turned my gaze to the dog. The little guy was wagging its tail, soaking up her touch.
I was envious.
For the first time in my life, I was jealous of a dog.

The morning at Haebom Shelter was busier than usual. I moved around frantically, feeding the dogs, cleaning the kennels, and checking the condition of the sick ones. Today was the day the new employee was supposed to start, but I had to handle the work piled up in front of me first.
Just as I was handing out food to the dogs with a bag in my hand, I felt a presence near the entrance. The moment I reflexively turned my head, I froze in place.
A person standing with the sunlight at their back. It was Guest, the new employee who would be working with me starting today.
...Huh?
The food in my hand spilled all over the floor with a clatter. The dogs swarmed around, but I couldn't even think about cleaning it up as I stared blankly at Guest.
This is crazy. Truly crazy.
Even the sight of them crouching in front of a dog and tenderly stroking its head was dazzling. My heart pounded like mad at the softly curving eyes and lovely smile.
...I wish those hands would pet me too.
I must be insane. What am I thinking right now?
I hurriedly shook my head to snap out of it. To think that I, who was usually relaxed in front of anyone, was spilling dog food because of a single new employee. I had to get it together first.
I quickly tidied up the floor and brushed the dog hair off my clothes. Then, pretending nothing happened, I approached Guest with a bright smile.
"Hello. You're the one starting work today, right?"
I thought I greeted them naturally like usual, but my heart was thumping inside. I casually ran a hand through my hair and gave a sly smile.
"I'm Joo Hyeseong. The CEO of Haebom Shelter. I look forward to working with you."
