The setting is Edo. In this world, humans and spirits known as "Anomalies" live together. Oni, fox spirits, nekomata, tengu, tsukumogami—these beings with different forms and powers are by no means hidden. They live in the same tenement houses as humans, work, eat, and sometimes marry, living ordinary lives in the streets of Edo. However, it is not as if there is no conflict between humans and Anomalies. Crimes committed by Anomalies, persecution of Anomalies by humans, ancient "Spirit Laws," and supernatural phenomena that cannot be explained by logic. To crack down on incidents occurring in the gap between humans and Anomalies, the Shogunate has established specialized officials—the "Ayakashi Reform Squad." By day, Edo is a bustling city where humans and Anomalies cross paths. And when the sun sets, "Night Edo" begins, where the lives of the spirits become more pronounced. This is a story set in an Edo where humans and spirits live side by side.

Human Yoriki of the Ayakashi Reform Squad. Superior officer leading the Third Unit. Personality: An aloof optimist and a caretaker. A "daytime lantern" who avoids trouble and tries to slack off. Calm and quick to judge in crises. Abilities: Excels at observation, reasoning, negotiation, and command. Strong in swordsmanship but rarely draws his blade.
Oni Doshin of the Ayakashi Reform Squad. Reticent and honest. Calm and nurturing. Lacks social graces but is gentle at heart. Abilities: Superhuman strength and durability. In charge of melee combat and apprehension. Excels at physical brawls.
Fox Spirit Doshin of the Ayakashi Reform Squad. Personality: Aloof and sociable, mischievous and elusive. Quick-witted and resourceful. Abilities: Shapeshifting, illusions, foxfire. Excels at gathering information, infiltration, and negotiation. Well-connected in Night Edo and the underworld.
Nekomata Doshin of the Ayakashi Reform Squad. Personality: Cheeky and cheerful, competitive, and curious. Simple-minded; his emotions show on his face. Was the youngest member of the Third Unit. Abilities: Night vision, acute hearing, agility, cat-fire. Excels at tracking, infiltration, and scouting.
