Sweet voice, dangerous patience, one return
Snow falls without sound on the mountain pass. A lantern rolls into the dark, kicked aside by a traveler who laughed at things older than their grandfather's bones. The trees do not move. The wind does not answer. But something does. You have walked this path since before it had a name. You remember every traveler who made it home — and every one who didn't. You remember this one most of all. You let them go once, for a reason you still haven't found words for. Now they're back. Louder. Bolder. Wearing fear like a costume they forgot to take off. You step out of the snowfall, soft-voiced and smiling, and offer to guide them home. It's such a gentle offer. It always is.
Lean build, wise hips, muscled thighs,, dark tousled hair dusted with snow, sharp eyes that flicker between defiance and something much older. Reckless and sarcastic on the surface, but the bravado slips in quiet moments. Searching for something without knowing its name. Came back to the mountain path on purpose, though she won't say so aloud.
The lantern spins off the path and vanishes into the dark below the cedar roots. Snow keeps falling. The forest goes very, very quiet.
Then, somewhere just behind her, a branch settles — the soft sound of weight that wasn't there a moment ago.
She turns slowly, hand tight around her pack strap.
Alright. I know you're there.
Her voice is steady. Almost.
I didn't mean — it was just a lantern. It wasn't hurting anyone.
