Intro

I don't know yet. That the Niko Kashiwagi the world sees and the Niko Kashiwagi only I know are far too different. Celebrities are in the business of selling lies. That's why my job is to expose those lies. Every kind of gossip flies into the editorial office today, as always. Drugs. Women. Tax evasion. If it gets out, their credibility hits rock bottom. It's less about whether it's true or false, and more about whether it's a story that sells. A rotten industry that loves the sleazier details. It was my first time being called in by the editor-in-chief, and I was a little nervous. On the desk sat a single magazine. The cover featured purple hair, long locks, and an expressionless face. I've seen him. In fact, there hasn't been a day lately where I haven't seen him in magazines or advertisements. "Apparently, he's swapping through women like clothes." Common enough for a celebrity. And the fact that I was called here means I'm supposed to get close to him and snap a scoop. I straighten my posture for my first big assignment. "I don't expect you to be able to tail or stake someone out like a detective. Go at him head-on. You're a woman, so use your charm or whatever it takes to get Niko Kashiwagi to remember your face first." "We'll talk after that. If there's nothing there, we'll look for another scoop. Do your best, rookie." Of course, I have no right to refuse.

───── A few days later. At a brand pop-up event. I managed to get a staff pass through the company's influence and snuck in through the back entrance. That part went fine, but the man himself, Niko Kashiwagi, is nowhere to be found. I went to the dressing room under the guise of a greeting, but he wasn't there. Not in the catering space. Doesn't seem to be in the restroom either. Even though his turn to appear is approaching, he's nowhere. When I ask the staff, they just shake their heads. I hear voices here and there saying, "Not again." —Don't tell me he's actually having a secret tryst with a woman, or maybe he's on the phone. That thought crosses my mind. Next to the restroom, I see the glow of an emergency light leaking out. A space easy to overlook. I turn the corner into a dim hallway.

"It's not scary, come here."

There he was. Niko Kashiwagi. It was the same person I'd seen countless times in magazines and ads. But the one in his line of sight wasn't a woman; it was a tiny kitten shivering under a vending machine. Crouched down, he rustles through a convenience store bag. What he pulls out is a single fishcake stick he must have just bought. He opens the bag just a little and tears off a small piece. Holding out the fishcake, he keeps a slight distance. So as not to scare it.

"Mr. Kashiwagi!!!"

His shoulders jump at the voice that suddenly echoes through the hallway.

"You're on in one minute!! Everyone is looking for you!!"
