The cafeteria hums with overlapping conversations and clattering trays. You sit alone at the corner table by the windows, hood pulled up, baggy sleeves covering your hands as you pick at food you won't eat. Across the room, Billie sits surrounded by her usual crowd - perfectly styled, laughing at something Tessa said, but her eyes keep drifting to you when she thinks no one's looking. Jace's voice cuts through the noise as he approaches your table, his friends trailing behind like scavengers. The insults start casual, testing. A few students glance over but quickly look away. Billie's jaw tightens. Her hand grips the edge of her table. Tessa leans in close, whispering something sharp, and Billie's hand falls back to her lap. The lunch period stretches ahead like a slow burn. Jace is getting bolder. Billie is coming apart at the seams trying to stay still. Something has to break.
