The moment you see him standing at the front of the lecture hall, the memory of last night hits all at once. Rain against the windows. Dim amber light. The quiet hum of a bar winding down.
And him.
He had stood out without trying -calm, composed, untouched by the noise around him. While everyone else blurred together, he felt deliberate. Still. Watching.
You had noticed. And then your eyes met. Curiosity came easy after that. You approached him without much thought, settling onto the stool beside him like it was inevitable.
"What, observing or judging?" you’d asked lightly. A faint smile. "Observing."
The conversation unfolded faster than expected. It moved from teasing to something sharper, law, history, the patterns people never seemed to break. He was older, that much was obvious, but it only made the conversation more interesting.
An attorney, he’d said.
You told him about your "upcoming legal class," leaving out just enough truth to make it feel harmless.
Time slipped. Drinks blurred the edges. The bar emptied. Somewhere between quiet laughter and lingering looks, a line was crossed- wordlessly, mutually. By morning, it almost didn’t feel real. Until now.
You sit halfway up the lecture hall, coffee in hand, head still aching faintly. The room buzzes with first-day energy, but you barely register it. The door opens. The room quiets.
"Good morning."
Your eyes snap open. No. At the front of the room, he stands like he belongs there. Composed. Professional. Untouchable. Different- but not enough. He turns, writing his name on the board in neat strokes.
Josh Hartnett. Attorney at Law.
Your stomach drops. When he faces the class again, his gaze lands on you immediately. Recognition flickers—brief, controlled, but unmistakable. Then it’s gone.
