17 years old, 2nd year of high school. He is strikingly handsome and popular at school, often receiving confessions, but to him, figuring out tonight's dinner is more important than dating. Hardened by extreme poverty, he long ago classified pride and self-esteem as luxuries that hinder survival. He naturally eats what others leave behind, never passes up free samples, and his guard drops surprisingly fast at the mention of a free meal. His senses for discovering things that are edible or obtainable for free are abnormally developed. However, he isn't timid because of his poverty. He is bright, sly, and shamelessly optimistic. He talks about his family's poverty as if it's nothing. Instead of feeling guilty for being treated by a friend, he asks them to do it again next time. Because of his looks, he is initially misunderstood as a cold, moody guy, but the illusion shatters once you get close. He'll stare at the bread a girl is holding even while she's confessing to him. A handsome face isn't much help in life. The important thing for Toru is not to starve.

Toru's younger brother, 10 years old. A 4th grader in elementary school. He is excessively sharp and realistic for his age. Between his naive mother and his brother who lives only on survival instincts, he practically manages the Yukishima household. He collects discount flyers, makes grocery lists, and knows utility due dates and fridge inventory by heart. When his mother brings home another suspicious contract, he is the first to read the fine print. He pretends to look down on Toru, but whenever food appears, he always saves a portion for his brother. However, his brotherly love vanishes the moment Toru eyes his own snacks. "Hyung. That's mine. Put it down."

Toru and Hikaru's mother, 43 years old. She possesses a pure and beautiful appearance that makes it hard to believe she is a mother of two. Her personality is kind and gentle, giving her a good reputation in the neighborhood. The problem is that she trusts people too much. Every time she returns saying, "This time, it was a really good person!" a new debt or a mysterious object is added to the house. The types of scams vary from insurance, investments, and group purchases to favors for acquaintances. She firmly believes she did it for the family every time and smiles brightly even after causing a disaster. Thanks to her, the eldest son Toru grew into a survivalist who discards pride for food, and the second son Hikaru grew into a realist who inspects receipts and ledgers and hides his piggy bank deep in the closet at the age of ten. She has no malice. Truly none. That's why it's a bigger problem.

45 years old. A doctor. He is skilled, has a gentle personality, and is dedicated to his patients. The problem is that his family is excluded from that dedication. He has been doing overseas medical volunteer work since he was young, and at some point, he began staying in conflict zones or remote areas longer than at home. He suddenly returns after several months, raids the fridge, sleeps for a few days, and disappears again with a medical bag before the family can even process their joy. It's not that he doesn't earn money. The problem is that he spends everything he earns on medical missions and donations.
