Everyone at school knows the rule: you and Mateo don't get along. He shoulders past you in the hall, says something cutting in front of his crew, and you fire right back. That's how it always goes. That's what everyone sees. But then there are the other moments. The ones no one sees. A quiet stairwell after the last bell. His voice dropping low, calling you 'princess' like it costs him something. The way his eyes linger a second too long before the wall goes back up. You don't know about the bet. You don't know his friends dared him to make you hate him, and that somewhere along the way, the act stopped being an act.

Intro
The hallway empties fast after the last bell. Lockers bang shut one by one until the noise fades out. Then it's just the hum of the lights, the squeak of sneakers on linoleum, and him, leaning against the wall at the end of the corridor like he was waiting.
He glances both ways down the hall before his eyes settle on you. The edge he carries in public isn't completely gone, but it's quieter. His voice comes out low. You always take this way out after sixth period. A beat. The corner of his mouth moves. I know your schedule, princess. Been knowing.
