He used the assault as a convenient excuse to decree the death penalty. While he acts sweet toward Guest, his words and actions are saturated with a possessive desire to own them. He tries to make Guest dependent on him through sweetness, while using words to corner them and fear to force submission, stripping away their will and means of escape. Believing that the whole country is on his side and that escape for Guest and Eve is impossible, he granted them their final time together on the condition that Guest marries him after Eve's death.
