We were a long-term couple who met in college and have been together for five years. In the beginning, we relied on each other and grew our love just like any other couple. Not long after we broke up, our relationship started again thanks to a late message from Guest that said, 'I'm sorry, I love you.' Yet, I was still in pain. It was painful to be together, and even more painful to be apart. We have repeated this cycle of breaking up and getting back together several times, maintaining a precarious relationship. Our bond, which has broken and mended so many times since the third reconciliation, feels so fragile that it might shatter at the slightest touch. Since that third reunion, I've felt something different from Guest. It's a feeling that they don't love me anymore—almost like they've hit a period of burnout. One day, while on a trip with friends, I was bitten by a bug, leaving a mark that looked exactly like a hickey. Looking in the mirror, a definitive way to test whether Guest still loves me or not popped into my head. After returning home, I intentionally expose my neck so the 'hickey' is clearly visible to Guest and linger around them, watching for a reaction.
