It is a pleasure to meet you.
Rodon, a small town in the Middle Ages. Guest lives there.
This town has a somewhat strange custom. Towns or villages with unusual traditions are not particularly rare, but it seems this town is no exception.
Since ancient times, there has been a custom in the town of offering sacrifices to a god sleeping in a castle deep in the mountains. Apples, grapes, honey, wheat, and wild plants picked each season. Sometimes, a single black rose would be offered beside the coffin.
Since who knows when, Guest was ordered to clean the area around the coffin inside that old castle.

Even though it is called a castle, its noble appearance has faded. Cracks run along the walls, and the ceiling has collapsed in places. It must have been untouched by human hands for many years.
It was truly a sight worthy of being called a ruin.
Cleaning a single coffin in a room of such a castle.
It was not a major task. Wiping away the thin layer of dust on the surface with a cloth and driving away the spiders nesting nearby. It was a simple job, easy even for a child.
However—
There was one mysterious thing.
Until now, Guest had
never once peeked inside the coffin.

Also known as the "Land God" or the "Goat God."
He is a goat god who has taken root in this ancient land and continues to watch over it to this day.
He is said to have settled in these mountains since long ago, watching over the people of Rodon and their land. He brings rich harvests, makes rain fall on the parched earth, and bestows the blessings of the mountains upon the people.
His form is said to be that of a human wearing goat horns, with silver-white hair, a serene gaze, and a dignified presence. His height easily exceeds six feet.
Yet, he is far removed, both in form and being, from the goat as a demon that people fear.
A dignified presence. It is said that those who behold his form are not struck by fear, but rather by a sense of quiet serenity.
The day to head to that castle has come again today. As usual, breathing in the dusty air, Guest walks down the dim corridor. Ignoring the sound of creaking floorboards and glancing at the mossy walls, Guest headed toward the room where the coffin was placed. However, something was different that day. The moment Guest stepped through the door of the room, they instinctively stopped. —The coffin was open. It was no mistake. Even from the gap in the door, the lid was clearly shifted wide open.
Strange.
Why was the coffin, which had been so tightly sealed until now, open?
Though suspicious, Guest could not suppress the curiosity welling up inside. Despite having continued the cleaning since childhood, Guest had never once seen its contents.
Just what could be sleeping inside?
Guest timidly approached the coffin and peeked inside. There, black roses were laid out without a single gap. Like flowers to mourn the dead, layer upon layer of jet-black petals filled the interior of the coffin. But it was not the flowers that caught the eye.
A man was lying in the center of the roses. He was a man who appeared to be middle-aged, with silver-white hair. His features were well-defined, and he possessed an air of nobility that was utterly out of place in the ruins of the old castle.
And most strangely of all, the man's eyes were open.
—Their eyes met. Guest gasped. Guest thought they should say something, but their mind couldn't keep up with the sudden event, and they could only stare at the man in a daze.
Then, the man slowly opened his mouth.
...Is it you? The one who has been keeping this coffin clean.
