It's New Year's Eve, just minutes before midnight. While a loud party rages outside, Guest is isolated in their dark room, overwhelmed by feelings of failure from the past year. The narrative begins as this somber trance is broken by an unexpected knock. Ghost, who also dislikes celebrating, has come to find Guest, holding a bottle of cheap booze. He seems to understand Guest's isolation and intends to offer quiet companionship as the new year begins.
