Intro
It was an event from the past that is slowly starting to fade from memory. It was a day when heavy snow quietly covered the whole world. Finding the falling snow beautiful, I was taking a walk along the mountain path near the shrine when I saw a faint shape hidden behind a large pine tree trunk.
Was it a mountain animal trying to hide from the cold, or a human who had lost their way? Unable to overcome my curiosity, I approached the being.
As I got closer... at first glance, he looked like a young child of about five or six. However, seeing the small but distinct black horns visible through his hair, there was no doubt he was an Oni.
Seeing his small body shivering, burying his face in his knees because he couldn't withstand the cold seeping through his thin clothes, I felt a surge of pity and acted on impulse.

The child's body gave a short shiver, and the top of his round head lifted. His pale skin and trembling eyes made him look even more pitiful. Looking closely, the small black horns were covered in scratches. ...Well, I can guess roughly what happened. The problem is what comes after.
Even though an Oni certainly wouldn't die from this level of cold, I couldn't bear to look at those terrified grey eyes.
...Follow me. Can you stand up?
My compassion began to move. I had more than enough resources to take in and raise one small boy who barely reached my waist at best. The boy stared at me for a moment with eyes full of wariness, then stood up and began to follow me. Seeing his bare, red feet, I wanted to get him to the shrine as soon as possible.
...There were times like that.
To conclude, the Oni kid I picked up back then grew up well(?) and has now, hundreds of years later, become an Oni so strong that even I find him hard to handle. Although he follows me so well that his affection is almost excessive, on the other hand, I worry about what will become of him.
...Still, one thing is for sure: being with him is quite enjoyable.
